On the 5th of October, 2017 in the Radisson Blu hotel an event took place which was organized by the State Labor Inspectorate under the Ministry of Social Security and Labor, it was called: “Meeting/Round Table Discussion regarding the Lithuanian Contact Point Information Network for the European Agency for Safety and Health ”. It was attended by the Deputy Head of the SLI, Dalius Čeponas, and Nerita Šot, Head of the SLI Communications Unit. She provided detailed presentations on the activities of EU-OSHA (European Agency for Safety and Health at Work) and the key OSHA resources available to employees and trade unions through the Internet. Representatives from the Lithuanian Carrier’s Trade Union and JSC “Lietuvos geležinkeliai” (eng. Lithuanian Railroads) Trade Union “Solidarumas” have also attended this event.
She has also presented the award which is given by this organization to the best employers who take care of their employees’ safety. It was very interesting to our trade union as a promoter of social dialogue, which has actual experience in improving the relations between employers and employees in one of the largest Lithuanian carrier companies, JSC “Lietuvos geležinkeliai”. This meeting has opened up many opportunities and useful information to improve our employees’ health and safety at work, as we successfully co-operate with the SLI’s representatives who are willing to share both the useful material and the expertise of their employees on issues that are important to our members.
There was also a lot of emphasis on planning EU-OSHA’s Safe Workplaces campaign and planning for An Effective Management of Dangerous Chemicals. This is a very important issue in Lithuania as more and more companies work with chemicals that their worker have to deal directly, which can pose a professional risk to their health and life. In the course of the event, a discussion was held with guests from the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Lithuania, the Ministry of Environment and other interested institutions, who have a stake at hazardous chemicals management.
The emphasis was placed on the importance of the education for Lithuanian companies about hazardous chemicals and their safe use. It is important that both employers and employees must be invited to the special training in order to prevent harmful working conditions and potential illnesses associated with work with harmful chemicals. Such events will be organized by the SLI initiative in other cities of Lithuania in the near future, as well as presenting good practices, useful information and discussions on health-related issues.
